Born in Europe, I was originally trained as a baker, however after my return from World War I, I started to produce sports shoes in my mother’s wash kitchen.
My family helped me start my own business. My father worked in a shoe factory and my brothers produced hand-made spikes – both helping me to achieve the point of difference for which my shoes became later known.
During the 1928 Olympics, the strategic decision was made to equip several athletes with my company’s products. This was a success and led to the international expansion of the business.
I died in 1978 at the age of 78 years and my son and wife took over the management of my business. My business was named after me using a combination of my full name in 1948. My brother went on to start his own footwear business (named after a sleek animal) and his company has also soared to great heights, and is today a well known and respected business.
