Born April 3, 1783 in New York City to parents who migrated from Orkney Islands, Scotland, my literary aspirations were encouraged by my older brothers. In 1804, I began writing for various periodicals but my first book was a satire on local history and contemporary politics in 1809 for which I used the name D. Knickerbocker as the narrator.
I left the U.S. in 1815 for England, to try and salvage my family’s business, after serving in the War against the British, for attacking Washington D.C in 1814. My attempts at salvaging my family’s business in Europe failed, however it was during this time that I wrote my two most famed literary pieces that were published in 1820 in a collection known as “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon”. I stayed in Europe for a total of 17 years, but never married.
I am credited with popularizing the nickname, “Gotham” for New York City (that was later used in the Batman comics), as well as the expression, “The Almighty Dollar”. I have a village named after me in New York, as well as a town in New Jersey.
Famous and influential authors such as Edgar Allan Poe have said to have been encouraged by me.
