husband. I converted to Islam and my first name was changed to an Arabic word meaning “light” soon before getting married in June 1978. We had four children and our family included eight children from my husband’s former marriages.
In 1992 my husband was diagnosed with Lymphatic cancer and died seven years later. A surprise to all, two weeks before his death he appointed the eldest son from his first marriage to be his heir to the throne, instead of appointing our eldest son.
In recognition of my efforts to advance development, democracy, and peace, I have been awarded numerous awards and honorary doctorates in international relations, law and humane letters. I have also published two books, one of them which became a New York Times best seller in 2003 and it was published in 15 languages.
Currently, I spend most of my time in Washington D.C. from where I work on behalf of numerous international organizations and where I make 70 to 100 speaking appearances annually.
