My adventures in the Himalayas and Antarctica and my work for the Tibetan people, or sherpas of Nepal, went on for over four decades and I will always be remembered for a particular victory achieved one Spring morning in 1953. After this conquest, I told the first person I met the following phrase:
“Well, George, we finally knocked the b*stard off.”
Curiously, news of my success reached Britain on the day of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
I also reached the South Pole on 4 January 1958 as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, for which I led the New Zealand section, and in 1985 I accompanied Neil Armstrong in a small twin-engine ski plane over the Arctic Ocean and landed at the North Pole and thus became the first man to stand at both poles as well as on the summit of the world.
I today heralded and remembered as one of the greatest heroes of the twentieth centuries for my extraordinary achievements as well as my lifelong commitment to various humanitarian causes.
