I was a milkman, a bricklayer, a coffin polisher and a lifeguard before acting came along. I was once even offered the chance to join Manchester United.

In 1953, I entered the Mr. Universe contest, finishing third in the tall man's division. I am an enthusiastic poet, although I never allow anyone to see my work and I turned down the role of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings series because I didn't want to film down in Australia for 18 months.

I have two small tattoos on my right arm. One says "Scotland forever", the other "Mum and Dad." I got them when I enlisted in the British Navy at the age of 16.

During the filming for one of my hit films, I angered my martial arts instructor, who in turn, broke my wrist to teach me a lesson. I stayed with the wrist broken for a number of years thinking it was only a minor pain... the instructor was Steven Seagal.
